Into the Forest – Experiencing Finnish Nature at the Nordic Pavilion

On September 13–14, the Nordic Pavilion hosted Into the Forest, a special program organized by the Finnish Institute. The two-day event invited visitors to experience the healing and wellbeing that forests bring, engaging all five senses.

Immersed in Sounds and Images of the Forest

The program opened with Ääniä – Finland’s official soundscape by Lauri Porra, where layers of natural sounds drew participants into a meditative space. This was followed by Central Finland’s Audiovisual Landscape, a visual journey through forests and lakes where light and shadow danced between trees, blending sound and image into a moving sensory experience.

Documentaries Weaving the Stories of the Forest

The documentary Into the Forest I Go (2017, dir. Anu Kuivalainen) portrayed diverse perspectives on people’s relationship with the forest—from landowners and hunters to artists and those seeking peace of mind. Later, the new film Once Upon a Time in a Forest (2024, dir. Virpi Suutari) highlighted young people’s encounters with nature while confronting contemporary challenges such as deforestation and the balance between industry and preservation.

AistiSiimes: The Magic of the Forest with All Senses

Another highlight was AistiSiimes, a multi-sensory wellness installation recreating the magic of Lapland. Using scent, sound, visuals, temperature, and light, the space allowed participants to pause amid the busy Expo day and reconnect with the serenity of the forest.

Voices from the Visitors

Visitors described the event as “an unforgettable story of the forest,” “a moment where light and air left a lasting impression,” and “a rare fusion of nature and art.” Families with children were especially drawn to the relaxing atmosphere, making Into the Forest one of the most memorable programs of the Expo, and a record-breaking draw for the Pavilion.
