Moomin Day:Event Report

Celebrating 80 Years of Moomin – “Moomin Day” Held at the Nordic Pavilion!
On August 9, 2025, the Nordic Pavilion celebrated the 80th anniversary of Finland’s beloved national character, Moomin, with a special event: Moomin Day. The day brought together fans across generations and borders to share in the joy and values of the Moomin stories.
What is Moomin Day?
August 9 marks the birthday of Tove Jansson, the Finnish author and illustrator who created the Moomins. Since the release of the first novel “The Moomins and the Great Flood” in 1945, the stories have been translated into over 50 languages and continue to inspire people around the world.
In 2025, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Moomin’s debut. This year’s theme, “The door is always open,” highlights the timeless Moomin values of inclusivity, belonging, and kindness—a reflection of the idea that there is always a place where everyone is welcome.
Moomin Meet & Greet
Each appearance of Moomin was met with applause and smiles. Visitors enjoyed warm, joyful photo sessions with Moomin, who made a special journey from Moominvalley Park in Hanno, Saitama—an immersive theme park that brings the Moomin stories to life.
Letter Workshop with Japan Post
In collaboration with Japan Post and Rights and Brands, the letter-writing workshop focused on Moomin’s deep connection with handwritten letters—a recurring theme in both Tove Jansson’s life and her stories.
Participants colored their own Moomin-themed postcards and added a creative touch using foil. They then mailed the cards from a special postbox at the Pavilion. Each letter was stamped with a limited-edition Moomin postmark and stamp and later delivered to loved ones—a heartfelt reminder of connection through handwritten messages.
Relaxing Moomin Time at the Pavilion
As evening fell, the Pavilion opened its doors for a cozy “Moomin Time” session. Guests watched episodes from Moominvalley (TV series) and enjoyed Moomin coloring activities—creating a warm, welcoming space for children and adults alike.
Message from Nita Pilkama, Commissioner General, Finland
"It is a great honor to celebrate Moomin Day at Expo 2025, marking Moomin’s 80th anniversary. The first story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, tells of a family in search of a new home. Like the Moominvalley they eventually find, the Nordic Pavilion is also a shared home—built on trust and cooperation between five Nordic countries. It welcomes everyone with warmth and shared values.”
Message from Kumiko Ito, President & CEO, Rights and Brands
“Tove Jansson believed that self-expression begins with the ability to read and write. This belief, combined with Japan Post’s values of heartfelt communication, led to the launch of our letter-writing project. We’re delighted to share this message on such a special day, in a special place like Expo 2025.”
Moomin stories remind us of the beauty in embracing differences and staying true to ourselves. Moomin Day at the Nordic Pavilion celebrated those values, offering a moment of joy, reflection, and connection. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable day!
